The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Uriel H. Griggs, Jr. (ASN: 0-1184505), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 241st Field Artillery Battalion, 90th Infantry Division in action on 13 December 1944 in the vicinity of Dillingen, Germany. When visibility from a pillbox used as an Observation Post became limited, Second Lieutenant Griggs moved outside to a position under heavy observed enemy small arms fire at close range. He, at risk of his life, remained in this position, directed and adjusted accurate artillery fire which knocked out one enemy machine gun, three enemy mortars and killed approximately fifty enemy soldiers. The combined courage and technical knowledge of Second Lieutenant Griggs aided materially in the repulsion of the enemy counterattack. His gallantry was in accordance with high military tradition.
