The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Ferdinand B. Chapman (ASN: 34762527), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 90th Infantry Division in Northern France. On 7 August 1944 in the vicinity of ****, France, when his company was given the mission of capturing a town and his platoon was pinned down by enemy machine gun fire, Private First Class Chapman with complete disregard for his own safety exposed himself to enemy fire in order to take the enemy position under bazooka fire and succeeded in silencing the enemy machine guns. He then proceeded through the town knocking out another machine gun. In the operation he was wounded by despite his wounds, captured two enemy prisoners and returned them to the rear.
