The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Edward D. Watson (ASN: 0-1703064), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 160th Field Artillery Battalion, 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 1 September 1944 at Meximeux, France. Second Lieutenant Watson proceeded as an artillery forward observer, under small arms and mortar fire to a point where he could effectively deliver artillery fire against an attack in progress. From his point of observation, he was subjected to direct tank fire, yet he continued to maintain his observation post. Second Lieutenant Watson’s action was instrumental in repulsing the enemy attack and permitting our forces to retain vital routes. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the high traditions of the Armed Forces.
