The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Edward Burson Spalding, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 6 April 1862, while serving with Company E, 52d Illinois Infantry, in action at Pittsburgh Landing, Tennessee. Although twice wounded, and thereby crippled for life, Sergeant Spalding remained fighting in open ground to the close of the battle.
