The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant William H. Garo (ASN: 13057633), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily on 12 July 1943. Following an unsuccessful enemy tank attack, Sergeant Garo voluntarily led a combat patrol beyond his company’s exposed flank in an attempt to drive off enemy machine gunners and riflemen who had infiltrated our lines. Although mortally wounded in this action, Sergeant Garo accomplished his mission and removed a serious threat to his company’s security. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
