The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant James R. Dew (ASN: 33111076), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Ranger Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. During an advance on an important objective, two companies of his battalion were delayed by fire from a strongly fortified road block. Assisted by another enlisted man, Sergeant Dew advanced under cover of darkness, worked his way to the rear of this enemy position, and captured a number of the enemy, thereby enabling his battalion to continue its advance. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
