Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 2420 (June 3, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major (Armor) Joe G. Driskill, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 10 March 1970, while serving as S-3 Air Officer with the 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Troop L had encountered an estimated North Vietnamese Army Regiment near the village of Mang Kai. During the ensuing firefight, Major Driskill directed his Light Observation Helicopter into the densest portion of the battle. Flying at tree-top level, he directed and adjusted artillery and ground units. Constantly exposing himself to the deadly ground fire, he assured that when air strikes were called in they were on target. When he observed a disabled vehicle in the dense jungle near the area of the air strikes with five crew members aboard, he notified other elements of the vehicle’s location so they could make a removal. When the enemy attempted to retreat, Major Driskill instructed his pilot to fly toward the enemy to draw their fire. He also observed six North Vietnamese soldiers trying to flee the scene and quickly pinned them down with accurate bursts from his rifle. With his fuel running low, Major Driskill continued to make numerous low level passes in order to draw the enemy’s fire, exposing their positions and allowing the ground forces to use this to their advantage. Major Driskill’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
