The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John Chiefa (ASN: 6903060), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy east of Oran, Algeria, on 9 November 1942. During the Oran Offensive, Sergeant Chiefa, heedless of personal danger, and under heavy machine gun fire, crossed a road and carried a seriously wounded man to a place of safety. His courage and initiative at the risk of his life set an inspiring example for his comrades and were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
