The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Arlester A. Dennis, United States Army, for gallantry in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 9 July 1969, while serving as an armored cavalry assault vehicle driver with the 919th Engineer Company (Armored), 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, elements of the third platoon were engaged by an unknown-size enemy force using rocket grenades and automatic weapons. The lead vehicle was immediately hit by several anti-tank grenades, killing three crew members and severely injuring the other men. Specialist Dennis leaped from his position and dashed over forty meters to the disabled vehicle. He began to administer medical aid to the victims and manned a machine gun, firing accurate suppressive fire against the well-concealed North Vietnamese Army positions. He then helped direct the safe evacuation of his platoon leader. Specialist Fourth Class Dennis’ actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
