The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Sam Carter (ASN: 0-3752257), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from April through August 1943. When the leader of a weapons platoon was wounded during an engagement with the enemy and his mortar section had become disorganized and ineffective, Captain Carter reorganized the section and then worked his way to an exposed observation post subjected to accurate machine gun and mortar fire. From this position he was able to direct effective fire upon the enemy and permit our troops to proceed within assault range of the enemy. Captain Carter’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
