The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Thomas H. Reese, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Reese distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 23 June 1970 while serving as the Commanding Officer of Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, First Support Base SUSAN came under a full-scale attack by elements of two enemy regiments. The incoming mortars caused numerous casualties and severe damage to the base. At one point, a huge supply of chemical gas was in danger of exploding thirty meters from an occupied vehicle, but Captain Reese, despite his wounds, the incoming fire, and the obvious danger involved, extinguished the flames. He then searched the perimeter and found four wounded men. After ensuring that they were cared for, he went to each vehicle to make sure each of his men were accounted for. Captain Reese’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
