The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class J. B. Pearson (ASN: 34709782), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations on 21 to 22 January 1944. Private First Class Pearson’s Infantry Regiment was ordered to cross a river and attack the enemy entrenched in the terrain beyond. The attack was launched under terrific enemy artillery, nebelwerfer, mortar and small arms fire from across the river which was deep and rapid. The approach to the river was across 700 yards of open terrain with little cover and further protected by mine fields, booby traps and barbed wire. Many boats were destroyed entering the water and others were destroyed on the way across. In the face of all these obstacles Private Pearson pressed forward, crossed the river and penetrated deep into enemy territory. The furious fighting which continued for two days cost the lives of many Americans. During this action Private First Class Pearson met his death.
