The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Transportation Corps) Andrew I. Meditz, Jr. (ASN: 0-1946571), United States Army, for gallantry in action at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, during the period 20 to 23 February 1945. As a platoon leader, Lieutenant Meditz led his platoon of men ashore in the face of heavy enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire. He directed the placement of the Marine artillery battalion his platoon was transporting into firing position. For seventy-two hours without sleep or rest he continued to expose himself to enemy fire in bringing needed ammunition to the artillery positions. When one amphibian truck which he was leading stalled and was about to sink Lieutenant Meditz hastily made repairs, thereby saving valuable equipment. Through his efforts the artillery battalion was able to continue firing. His example of courage, initiative and resourcefulness, and devotion to duty were an incentive to his men in the successful accomplishment of his mission.
