Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7882 (November 1, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Leonard Olsen Graves (ASN: US-56960128), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Private First Class Graves distinguished himself by heroic actions on 11 September 1968, while serving as a rifleman with Company A, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. Private Graves was located at an observation post beyond his unit’s night position when the company’s perimeter came under intense enemy fire. Private Graves immediately shouted a warning to his comrades. Although he was wounded, Private Graves, with complete disregard for his personal safety, move through the fierce enemy fire to the aid of one of his injured comrades. Despite his wound, Private Graves proceeded to assist his fellow soldier until he could no longer continue. His valorous actions were responsible for saving his comrade’s life. Private Graves’ personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
