The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major (Infantry) Donald Caryl Graney (ASN: 0-90046), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 24 February 1967 while serving as an Advisor in Di Linh Subsector, Republic of Vietnam. On this date, information was received that the Viet Cong had set up a road block on a highway about six kilometers west of Di Linh. Upon receiving this information, Major Graney and his small force were taken under fire by the entrenched Viet Cong. Although seriously outnumbered, Major Graney continued to give advice and encouragement to the Vietnamese soldiers, and called in air and artillery fires on the insurgents. Major Graney’s determined efforts and unselfish refusal to seek his own safety, exposed what later developed as an enemy multi-battalion ambush conducted in conjunction with a Viet Cong regiment planning to overrun the district capital. The timely warning and aggressive actions initiated by Major Graney and the unit he advised resulted in the destruction of a large part of the ambush battalions and caused the other Viet Cong units in the area to be withdrawn without accomplishing their missions. Major Graney’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
