The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William J. Carty (ASN: 39093665), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. Caught in an enemy mortar concentration while moving to a Line of Departure for an attack on Le Tholy, France, the afternoon of 4 October 1944, Private First Class Carty, acting light machine gunner, led his squad through shell-fire into position. He manned his gun 150 yards from enemy mortar installations and poured sustained fire on the Germans, killing or wounding two. Although two shells which burst within 20 yards of him threw tree branches and dirt upon him, and a dud shell struck ten feet away, he maintained his position to deliver fire which forced the abandonment of the enemy position, the capture of eight Germans and four mortars. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
