Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 4 (January 13, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Corps of Engineers) Reico H. Monzione (ASN: 0-11`09533), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 150th Engineer Combat Battalion, 1135th Engineer Combat Group, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 8 – 9 December 1944, in France. Captain Monzione by his peerless leadership, determination, and courage greatly effected completion of the vital mission of the construction of the Treadway and Bailey Bridges across the Saare River near Saareinsming, France. Although the sites were continually under enemy artillery fire, reaching a state of concentration at times when work was impossible and portions of the bridges destroyed, Captain Monzione remained on the site many hours to effect their completion. He was ever present encouraging his officers and men even though wounded by shrapnel from an enemy shell burst. Captain Monzione’s superior leadership, tenacity of Purpose, and utter disregard for his personal safety reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
