The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Rodman H. Davis (ASN: 36364282), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, in action on 17 July 1944 near ****, France. During an attack in the operations against **** Sergeant Davis’ platoon was pinned down by enemy machine gun fire from an emplacement in a hedgerow to his front. Sergeant Davis, a squad leader, acting voluntarily and alone, crawled across the field to the enemy side of the hedgerow, where he shot the gunner with his rifle and silenced the weapon. His platoon was then able to advance. The gallantry, tenacity of purpose, unselfish loyalty and disregard for personal safety of Sergeant Davis reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
