Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 71 (May 4, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Harry Lee Bromley (ASN: 34503221), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 133d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Ciorlano, Italy, on 1 November 1943. On a hill under enemy infantry fire of machine guns, mortars and rifles, Private Bromley worked his way near an enemy machine gun position blocking his squad’s advance up the hill within the company’s sector. As he reached the machine gun nest, he jumped forward firing his rifle as he charged. He wounded several of the enemy and forced the remainder to abandon their weapon and flee. His actions enabled his squad to occupy their portion of the hill. Private Bromley’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
