The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Herbert Born (ASN: 36460122), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 16 February 1945. When tanks, demolitions, and grenades were unsuccessful in dislodging the Japanese from a well-fortified pillbox in a building of the Philippine General Hospital, Private First Class Born volunteered to operate a flame thrower against the position. Running and dodging as best he could with his bulky equipment, he crossed Taft Avenue through the line of fire of an enemy machine gun, maneuvered to within ten feet of the emplacement, and burned it out. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Born, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 838 (May 25, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Herbert Born (ASN: 36460122), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 12 March 1944, at Bougainville, Solomon Islands. Private Born was a member of a flame thrower team ordered forward to destroy a Japanese-held pillbox which had stopped the advance of an assault company. Fully exposed to hostile machine gunners, snipers and grenadiers, he crawled up the treacherous slope to the enemy-occupied hill crest. When he was only 10 yards from the pillbox, he rose to his feet and in full view of the enemy blasted the fortification until it was completely destroyed. Private Born returned over the same fire–swept area five times to recharge the flame thrower and with his comrades accounted for the destruction of four Japanese pillboxes, the occupants, and their weapons. His heroic action substantially reduced the enemy’s fire power and made it possible for a violent attack to continue until the Japanese forces were annihilated. Private First Class Born’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
