The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Jose Borbon (ASN: 10300524), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 45th Infantry Regiment (Philippine Scouts), Philippine Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Salaiim Bay, Bataan, Philippine Islands, on 11 February 1942. On that date, the brunt of the enemy’s attack was directed at a section of machine guns from Company H, which was covering by fire the gap between this section of guns at once and directed their fire. The section fought valiantly and heroically against overwhelming odds. The left gun was operated by seven men including Private Borbon. This gun was knocked out by rifles and grenades after all ammunition was expended. The entire squad, except for one man who had gone for ammunition, was killed in position at the gun. The right gun withdrew successfully under fire after firing all of its ammunition. Thirty enemy dead were found in front of the two guns. Private Borbon’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
