The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) George A. Allen (ASN: 0-1299662), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action against a hostile force while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action at Mount Rotundo, Italy, on 9 November 1943. Lieutenant Allen’s platoon was counterattacked by a determined force of German infantry and paratroopers armed with automatic weapons and grenades. At a distance of 50 yards from his platoon, the Germans opened fire, and advanced through the thick underbrush to within grenade throwing distance. Lieutenant Allen exposed himself on high ground in a position swept by terrific enemy fire in order to encourage his men and direct their fire on the advancing enemy. The Germans recognized him as a leader and made a determined effort to kill him. Concussion and potato masher grenades were thrown at him, some landing within three to five feet of him. He in turn, tossed grenades at the enemy, and, when his supply of grenades was exhausted, returned the enemy’s fire with his carbine. Later, having expended his carbine ammunition, he fired at the attackers with his pistol, and continued his stand until killed by a burst from an enemy machine pistol. Second Lieutenant Allen’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
