Robert Hoffman graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of August 1917. During World War II he was captured after the fall of the Philippine Islands, survived the infamous Death March, and was interred as a Prisoner of War. Repatriated at the end of World War II, he retired with disability in 1947 as a U.S. Army Colonel.

The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Hoffman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
