Gaynor, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of an Infantry Company of the 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 19 December 1944, during the Ardennes Offensive. Captain Gaynor covered the displacement of his company with accurate carbine fire, killing eight of the foe. Although exposed to heavy enemy fire, he then formed his company into a strong defensive line inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy and forcing them to disperse. Captain Gaynor’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 28th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
