After attending the University of Missouri for a year, George Brown received a congressional appointment to the U.S., Military Academy, West Point, New York, and graduated with the Class of 1941. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, earning the Distinguished Service Cross and Silver Star, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. General Brown was appointed by President Nixon to be Chief of Staff of the U. S. Air Force, effective August 1, 1973, and to become the 8th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and served in that position from July 1, 1974 until June 20, 1978 when he retired as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
