The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Arthur A. Chandler (ASN: 18002584), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company E, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 17 March 1945, in France. When his squad was pinned down by heavy machine gun and rifle fire during an advance up a wooded hill, Sergeant Chandler moved forward alone in the face of the enemy fire. Firing his rifle until his ammunition supply was exhausted, then an automatic rifle until it jammed and, finally, a pistol taken from a German prisoner, he advanced to the top of the hill, killing five Germans and capturing five prisoners. By his gallant and aggressive action he disorganized a strong enemy force and enabled the friendly troops to reorganize. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
