Headquarters, 36th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 237 (July 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Albert D. Cardani (ASN: 38071421), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 143d Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action on 3 February 1945 in France. While clearing a street during a night attack, Corporal Cardani was subjected to a heavy concentration of mortar and artillery fire and became separated from the rest of his squad. Undaunted, he continued forward alone. In one house he captured seven Germans and in another house he captured five more. Moving further down the street, he suddenly encountered grazing fire from an enemy machine gun. With one well-placed rifle grenade he killed the crew of the hostile weapon. As a result of his magnificent courage and aggressiveness, his squad was able to rejoin him and successfully complete its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
