The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Raymond E. Bibb (ASN: 0-1691874), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 132d Field Artillery Battalion, 36th Infantry Division, in action on 15 August 1944 in France. On D-Day in the invasion of Southern France Lieutenant Bibb flew his artillery observation plane from an improvised flight deck on an LST. Fully aware of the danger from enemy small arms and antiaircraft fire, he made many trips deep into enemy territory, determinedly searching for hostile guns which were shelling friendly troops. After completing his mission, he continued to fly his plane until his gasoline supply was almost exhausted and then landed under artillery fire on an unprepared field a mile inland from the beach. By his courage and skill Lieutenant Bibb materially contributed to the outstanding success attained by the ground forces during this critical operations. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
