The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Richard S. Abowitz (ASN: 31383767), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 21 January 1944. The Infantry Regiment of which Private Abowitz was a member was ordered to cross a river and attack the enemy. This attack was initiated under heavy enemy artillery, mortar and machine gun fire which continued throughout the operation. Advancing in the face of overwhelming enemy fire, the Infantrymen crossed the river and moved toward their objective. While so doing, Private Abowitz and other soldiers became separated from their unit, and now are listed as missing. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
