The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private James P. Herron, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy in Italy on 21 January 1944. Forward platoons of an Armored Infantry regiment were pinned down by enemy machine gun and sniper fire. During this time the first platoon was held in reserve. The first rifle squad of the reserve platoon was sent up to support the advance platoon. While crossing an open field the rifle squad was fired on by sniper and machinegun fire. Three men of the rifle squad were pinned down by the enemy. Private Herron, one of the men to reach cover, turned around and saw the rest of the squad in the open field. Without anyone ordering him to do so, he exposed himself to enemy fire to guide the rest of the squad to positions from which they could bring fire upon the enemy. As a result of his act, the squad’s casualties were held to a minimum. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
