The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Private First Class Richard J. Adams (MCSN: 1191607), United States Marine Corps, for heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy while serving as a rifleman of Company G, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division. Private First Class Adams displayed exceptional courage, initiative and professional skill in the performance of his duties. When a member of the platoon was mortally wounded on an outpost located far forward of the main line of resistance, he unhesitatingly volunteered to assist a stretcher party to carry him to safety. Although aware that previous daylight evacuations from the outpost had proved extremely hazardous, he fearlessly advance forward with the rescue team. Due to the location of the outpost, the evacuation trail was almost entirely under close enemy range and observation. Expressing complete disregard for his personal safety, he walked slowly and carefully so as not to cause the stricken man further pain. Private First Class Adams’ resourcefulness, indomitable spirit and outstanding attention to duty served as an inspiration to all who observed him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Private First Class Adams is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
