The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Samuel J. Reever (ASN: 13022024), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Hamich, Germany, 16 November 1944. Although constantly subjected to intense machine-gun and small-arms fire and in danger of being overrun by hostile tanks and infantry, Sergeant Reever remained at an exposed observation post and directed effective mortar bombardment of a counterattacking enemy force. When finally compelled to withdraw, he maneuvered to an alternate position affording clear observation and continued to adjust fire until the attack was completely repulsed. Sergeant Reever’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
