The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Henry J. Newton (ASN: 13019899), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily on 13 July 1943. Private First Class Newton crawled forward under heavy enemy fire to silence an enemy gun. Advancing through this demoralizing fire to a point 200 yards in advance of the most forward elements of his battalion, he attacked the enemy tanks, disabling one and forcing the remaining tanks to retire. Although mortally wounded, his gallant sacrifice materially assisted his comrades in attaining their objectives. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
