Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 43 (September 1, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private George E. O’Neal (ASN: 35485827), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily during the period from March through August 1943. When his landing craft was bombed and set afire by enemy aircraft, Private O’Neal, despite a painful wound, administered first-aid and assisted in evacuating the wounded from the boat. Although endangered by exploding ammunition, Private O’Neal was one of the last men to leave the boat. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
