The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Hospitalman Apprentice First Class Hubert E. Williams (NSN: 7578475), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Hospital Corpsman with a Marine Rifle Company on Okinawa Shima, Ruykyu Islands. On 10 May 1945, the rifle platoon to which Hospital Apprentice First Class Williams was attached was advancing through an intense concentration of enemy mortar fire, when he was rendered unconscious by an exploding shell. Regaining consciousness while being carried to the aid station he refused to be evacuated and quickly re-joined his platoon, the advance of which was then retarded by withering enemy rifle and machine gun fire. Despite his shaken condition, he remained with his unit throughout the day, and with utter disregard for his own safety in the face of intense enemy fire, continued to treat the wounded and to assist them to positions from which they could be evacuated. By his unselfish devotion to duty and professional skill he materially assisted in saving the lives of several Marines. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
