    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Gordon Bennett Williams (NSN: 0-81170), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of a United States Destroyer during operations against the enemy off Okinawa, on 9 April 1945. While assigned to picket duty, by cool and capable direction, he caused his ship to deliver heavy and accurate gunfire when subjected to a coordinated attack by six Japanese suicide planes. Three planes were destroyed, two driven off and one crashed into the ship during an interval of only two and one-half minutes. His courage and outstanding conduct were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
