    The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Commander August Frederick Weinel (NSN: 0-77206), United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy as Diving Officer of the U.S.S. POLLACK (SS-180) during FOUR highly successful War Patrols of that Submarine in enemy controlled waters during World War II. On one occasion, while acting as Officer-of-the-Deck during a night surface attack his calm and courageous assistance to the Commanding Officer was directly responsible for the complete destruction of a valuable enemy ship. His conduct throughout these patrols was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
