The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander George Paul Unmacht (NSN: 0-72538), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. STODDARD (DD-566), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 6 June 1945. During numerous suicide plane attacks on the unit to which the STODDARD was attached, Commander Unmacht successfully directed the fire of his guns and, skillfully maneuvering his vessel, enabled her to come through the engagement without damage by the suicide planes. His courage, leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
