Action Date:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Archibald Egerton Teall (NSN: 0-77058), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. BOYD (DD-544), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Okinawa Jima from 11 May to 21 June 1945. Although his ship was attacked relentlessly by hostile torpedo, dive-bombing and Kamikaze aircraft, Commander Teall assisted in maintaining an outer perimeter of radar picket stations for the early detection of attacking aircraft, which accounted for large numbers of enemy planes by gunfire and prevented air attacks from weakening the expeditionary force at Okinawa. When the U.S.S. THATCHER was crashed by an enemy suicide plane and severely damaged, he maneuvered his ship alongside her to assist in extinguishing the fires and caring for the wounded. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
