The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Douglas McKean Swift, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. LANSDALE (DD-426) during an attack by enemy aircraft off the coast of Algeria on the night of 20 April 1944. As an enemy aircraft attack developed against the convoy of which the LANSDALE was one of the escorts, Lieutenant Commander Swift maneuvered his ship with great skill and dispatch and at the same time vigorously repelled an enemy torpedo plane approach to the formation. This action accounted for the destruction of three and possibly four of the attacking planes, and afforded vital protection to the valuable ships of the convoy. At least seven torpedoes were fired at his ship at close range, one of which could not be avoided and cased her loss. Before abandoning ship, however, he instituted all possible measures to prevent the ship from sinking and fought the enemy to the last. While in the water awaiting rescue, he continued to encourage survivors and sustained a semi-conscious crew member who would otherwise have undoubtedly drowned. His exemplary conduct and coolness in directing the clearing of the ship resulted in the recovery of an exceptionally large number of his crew. The exceptional courage, fearless leadership under enemy fire, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Commander Swift were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
