William Standley graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1895. From July 1, 1933 to January 1, 1937, he served as the Navy’s 6th Chief of Naval Operations. He also served as the U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1941 until 1943.
