    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain [then Lieutenant] Augustus Robert St. Angelo (NSN: 0-62514), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Assistant Approach Officer of the U.S.S. SALMON (SS-182), in action against enemy Japanese forces in the South China Sea during the THIRD War Patrol of that Submarine from 3 May to 24 June 1942. Demonstrating sound judgment and a thorough knowledge of attack problems, Captain St. Angelo rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting attacks which resulted in the sinking of two enemy ships totaling 9,800 tons. By his cool courage and indomitable fighting spirit, he contributed directly to the success of the SALMON in offensive action and in evading hostile countermeasures. His devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
