The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Robert Samuel Snoddy (NSN: 6059266), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Medical Corpsman attached to the First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 3 May 1945. Resolute in his determination to assist the great number of casualties resulting from the fierce enemy machine gun and mortar fire, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Snoddy unhesitatingly advanced through the intense hostile cross fire to render first aid to wounded Marines and then carried them one by one to safety, continuing this tireless and self-sacrificing service until himself seriously wounded by an enemy sniper’s bullet. His exceptional bravery and calm efficiency served as an inspiration to those with whom he served and his unwavering devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Snoddy and the United States Naval Service.
