The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant] Roger Falter Smith (NSN: 0-85257), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as First Lieutenant of the U.S.S. SAURY (SS-189), during the SIXTH War Patrol of that Submarine in the East China Sea from 7 May to 7 June 1943. Ably maintaining and operating the equipment in his department, Lieutenant Commander Smith rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting successful attacks which resulted in the sinking of three enemy ships totaling approximately 25,000 tons. By his cool courage, he contributed directly to the success of his vessel in evading severe enemy countermeasures, and at all times upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
