The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Philip Kingsland Sherman, Jr. (NSN: 0-72565), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer of the U.S.S. STACK (DD-406) during a night action between United States Naval Forces and Japanese Surface Forces on the night of 6 – 7 August 1943, in the Vella Gulf, New Georgia Island Group. During the action which lasted for about one hour and which took place in restricted waters under conditions of low visibility with frequent rain squalls, he, by his timely advice and help was of invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in meeting the many problems which arose during the battle and thereby contributed directly to the successful prosecution of the action and the complete destruction of all enemy units engaged. By his fearlessness, leadership, and calmness he contributed to the steadiness of the ship’s company as a whole. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
