The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Ernest Louis Schwab (NSN: 0-82460), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Assistant Approach Officer, Navigator and Executive Officer of the U.S.S. DARTER (SS-227), during the FOURTH War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy Japanese-controlled waters, from 1 September to 24 October 1944. Skilled in the performance of duty, Lieutenant Commander Schwab rendered invaluable assistance to his Commanding Officer in delivering torpedo attacks to sink one enemy heavy cruiser and damage another despite severe enemy countermeasures. His devotion to the fulfillment of his assignment was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
