    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Commander Carroll Dayne Reynolds, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. SELFRIDGE (DD-357), from May 1942 to October 1943. From May 1942 to May 1943, the SELFRIDGE operated mainly with Task Force SEVENTY-THREE, performing convoy and patrol duties in the Coral Sea, participating in the Guadalcanal-Tulagi landings, and taking part in the First Battle of Savo. Following this period, the SELFRIDGE escorted re-supply echelons to Vella Lavella and made night runs up “the Slot” in search of the “Tokyo Express.” The SELFRIDGE participated in the consolidation of the Southern Solomons, performing convoy and escort duties. On 8 August 1942, she shot down five enemy planes out of forty attacking her task group. Throughout this prolonged period of hazardous operations in dangerous waters, the courage, leadership, and professional skill displayed by Commander Reynolds contributed materially to the success of these operations. His conduct and devotion to duty were outstanding and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Commander Reynolds is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Carroll Dayne Reynolds, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against an armed enemy during World War II. His division took part in the engagements with a large force of enemy planes. His division was further employed in the important role of escort duty of the re-supply echelons. During these operations, units of his command were subjected to enemy air attacks. In all of these operations his division successfully executed its mission inflicting heavy losses on the enemy and suffering only a minimum of losses itself. The highly successful manner in which his division executed its task was due to his courage, energy, professional skill and outstanding leadership. His gallantry and intrepidity in action were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
