The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Harry Douglas Power (NSN: 0-56069), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. BETELGUESE (AK-28), landing troops and supplies in the Guadalcanal Area during August, September and November 1942. While participating in the initial occupation of Guadalcanal on 7 – 9 August 1942, and on four later trips in waters adjacent to the island, Captain Power fought his ship through Japanese dive-bombing and torpedo attacks to land vitally needed supplies and reinforcements. In all, the BETELGUESE was subjected to five bombing and two torpedo attacks, but by his expert seamanship and outstanding courage and determination, Captain Power completed his mission and brought his ship through every engagement without serious damage. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
