The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Herman Arnold Pieczentkowski (NSN: 0-63410/1100), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. STURGEON (SS-187) during a War Patrol of that Submarine in enemy waters around New Ireland Island, Bismarck Archipelago, from 16 September to 1 October 1942. He adeptly and daringly maneuvered his ship into firing positions and by torpedo fire sank a 10,000 ton tanker and a 7,000 ton store ship. Despite the great mental and physical strain of the long submerged patrol in enemy infested tropical waters he, at all times during these attacks on the enemy and during the severe depth charge attack which followed, skillfully and courageously handled his ship and brought her out of the actions without damage. His actions and conduct in these attacks upon the enemy were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
