Peters, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action on 8 July 1943 while serving as a Corpsman attached to the 9th Defense Battalion at New Georgia. Despite almost impenetrable undergrowth, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Peters volunteered to accompany a patrol on a hazardous assignment to clean out Japanese who were endangering personnel in the area. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
